With Memorial Day this weekend, many of us will be taking advantage of the long weekend by hitting the grill! Remember to follow these food safety tips to keep everyone healthy.
- According to FoodSafety.gov, at minimum, fresh beef should be cooked at 145 degrees, ground meat at 160 degrees, poultry at 165, and pork and ham at 145. See the whole list on cooking temperatures here. Use a food thermometer to continuously check the temperature.
- It’s important that your grill is hot enough to safely cook your food. Not sure if your charcoal grill is ready? You can gauge this by hovering your hand over the charcoal grill – if you can’t keep your hand over it for more than 2 seconds then the grill is ready!
- Use separate plates for raw meat and cooked meat so there is no cross contamination of harmful bacteria. Clean all surfaces the raw meat touched.
- Once you’re done cooking, continue to keep your food hot until served! It should remain at 140 degrees or warmer. Did you know harmful bacterial grows rapidy between 40 degrees and 140 degrees? Quickly put into the refrigerator after your meal in a sealed bag or container.
- Keep an eye on the grill and utensils at all times, especially if you have children!
When in doubt, follow these four simple steps when grilling: Clean, Separate, Cook and Chill.
While foodborne illness is awful for everyone, it’s especially dangerous for expecting mothers. According to the FDA, “Harmful foodborne microorganisms in food can cross the placenta and cause harm to the developing fetus.” If an expecting mother experiences any signs of a foodborne illness, check with her primary doctor immediately.
