This historic cabin was built to house the Philosopher Press which was the first printing company owned by a woman in the U.S. Helen Bruneau Van Vechten owned the book and magazine company with her husband Philip V.o. Van Vechten and another business man, William Ellis. Helen Van Vechten made a discovery which revolutionized the process of hand printing.,Helen was the moving force, designing and printing every page. The log cabin was built near the railroad station. The log cabin cost $1,500 to build in 1902. Mr. Marshall O. Pilsbury of J. H. Jeffers & Co. Architects of Wausau designed the cabin. The cabin is built of peeled Norway logs. The front door had massive hinges, forged in the local blacksmith shop. The cabin was sold when the press shut down. It was since owned by various parties including a church and the Girl Scouts. Many windows were replaced and the fireplace was rebuilt since its origination. This log cabin has a relaxing front porch where they watched the trains come in from Milwaukee and Chicago.
