On Tuesday, October 28, 2014 at approximately 5:16pm Jasper County Sheriffs’ Deputy Juan Trejo responded to a two car, head on, collision on the Kankakee River bridge on State Road 49.
Witness and on scene investigation revealed 43 year old Julie of Munster Indiana operating a 2013 Honda Pilot, was driving southbound on State Road 49 in an erratic manner. A witness following Julie was preparing to call police when Julie's Honda sideswiped the guard rail north of the Kankakee River.
Julie's vehicle continued southbound onto the Kankakee River Bridge, crossing left of center colliding head on with 43 year old Timothy A. Jacobs of Knox, Indiana operating a 2001 Ford F150 truck. Evidence at the scene indicate the Jacobs vehicle was fully in the northbound lane at time of impact and skid marks were left from the Jacobs vehicle prior to impact. Both vehicles came to rest on the bridge.
Fire Rescue from Kouts and Wheatfield aided in extrication of both drivers from their vehicles. Ambulance services from Wheatfield and Porter County aided in transport of both drivers to Porter Hospital.
Julie suffered injury to her lower leg and scalp and was conscious and talking. Timothy A. Jacobs complained of pain to his chest and had difficulty breathing while going in and out of consciousness. Jacobs succumbed to his injuries passing away while being transported to Porter Hospital.
Extensive damage to the front end areas of both vehicles was estimated between $10,000-$25,000.
Evidence of alcohol consumption is under investigation at this time. As the crash scene was centered on the Kankakee River bridge, ongoing investigation continues as to any possible criminal charges and therefore, which county would be responsible for said filing.
Also assisting at the scene were Porter County Sheriffs’ units.
