About Sauk County, Wisconsin

Nature's Beauty Enhanced by a Strategic Location
Sauk County’s Story
Sauk County, Wisconsin, in the
heart of the south-central portion of the state, is conveniently
located within minutes of Madison and Milwaukee and mere hours from
Chicago, Rockford and Minneapolis - but its residents enjoy the luxury
of a natural beauty enhanced by a strong work ethic, an outstanding
quality of life, and a strategic location.
Sauk County is bordered by Lake
Wisconsin and the Wisconsin River and includes three state parks,
Devil’s Lake, Mirror Lake and Natural Bridge. These three state parks
attract over 1.5 million visitors per year. Sauk County's scenic crowns
are the Baraboo Bluffs - designated as a "National Natural Landmark" by
the U.S. Department of Interior - and the enormously popular Wisconsin
Dells, which distributes its unique native beauty among 4 adjacent
counties. In 2005, 2.9 million visitors came to the the Dells. In 2005,
Sauk County ranked second in Wisconsin in total tourism expenditures,
ranking only behind Milwaukee County. Over 20% of the jobs in Sauk
County are directly related to the the hospitality industry.
A quick review of Sauk County's foremost
locales highlights "The Dells," of course. Wisconsin Dells, "The
Waterpark Capital of the World," offers a huge assortment of indoor and
outdoor water parks, amusement parks, boat and miltary "duck" (unique
WWII land-and-water vehicles) rides, eateries, curiosities and curio
shops and much more family fun. But Sauk County's advantages don't end
there. Baraboo features the International Crane Foundation, Ho-Chunk
Casino, and the Mid-Continent Railway as well as the fascinating Circus
World Museum - original home of the Ringling Brothers Circus, complete
with a scaled–down replica of the great opera hall at the Palace of
Versailles. Outside of Merrimac, Devil's Lake State Park and the
historic Colsac III Ferry across Lake Wisconsin offer hours of relaxing
outdoor enjoyment. Prairie du Sac and Sauk City offer spectacular
places from which to view the famous American bald eagles that are
native to the region and winter in the area. Prairie du Sac features
the down home charm of the Wollersheim Winery and in Spring Green you
can visit Taliesen - home of Frank Lloyd Wright - or attend an outdoor
performance of Shakespeare at the American Player’s Theater. Reedsburg
hosts a Pioneer Log Village and the "400" State Trail, part of a
101-mile network of bike paths through southwestern Wisconsin.
A recent (Feb, 2006) issue of
Progressive Farmer Magazine lauded Sauk County among the top 40 "Best
Place(s) to Live in Rural America." Counties were ranked based on
available and quality of health care, education and climate contrasted
against pollution, crime, and tax burden - as well as factoring into
the formula such intangibles as quality of life, leisure and cultural
activities and scenery.
