When I went to New York last year with my daughter one of the first places we visited was Rockefeller Center and the famous ice skating rink. We didn't skate because it was too expensive and I figured I can embarrass myself for free, I don't need to spend $60 an hour to do that!
However, Metro Detroit has some GREAT indoor and outdoor rinks that are affordable and a lot of the people there are not "expert" skaters. This matters to me because I don't want to be the ONLY one hugging the side rail as I pull myself along the ice! There are some really cool (pun intended) places to skate around Oakland County and Metro Detroit. Berkley, Birmingham, Farmington Hills, Hazel Park, Novi, Oak Park, Rochester Hills, Royal Oak, Southfield, Troy and Waterford ALL have indoor ice skating rinks. For those brave souls who can stand the cold, there are outdoor rinks in Auburn Hills, Birmingham, Clarkston, Farmington/Farmington Hills, Milford, Oakland Township, Rochester/Rochester Hills, Royal Oak and Wixom.
Of course, I prefer the warm summers and beaches of Michigan, but hey, if its gonna be cold we might as well have fun, right?
