Happy Earth Day! On this special day, we should be conscious of how our actions impact our environment. Here are a few things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint at home.
Who hates junk mail? Not only is junk mail annoying, it’s taking a huge toll on our environment. According to Carbonfund.org the energy used to produce, deliver and dispose of junk mail produces more greenhouse gas emissions than 2.8 million cars. An easy solution to this problem is signing up for 41pounds.org. For $35 for 5 years ($7 per year or 2 pennies a day) 41pounds.org will contact 20-30 companies to stop the junk mail from reaching your house. That’s it! With a few clicks and a couple dollars you’ve made an impact on the earth!
Another way to be environmentally-conscious is to save energy within your home. Saving energy not only helps your wallet, but also protects our climate. When choosing new windows, heating & cooling systems, appliances and electronics – try to choose options that are ENERGY STAR rated. This indicates that the appliance is more energy efficient than the minimum guideline required by that product. Also choose compact fluorescent light bulbs that have the cool curly shape. They save more than 2/3rds of the energy of a regular incandescent (but please make sure to read the box and instructions for safe disposal).
Finally, buy locally if possible! 60% of our carbon footprint is due to everything we buy and use. Buying locally will positively impact your local economy and will reduce shipping. Carbonfund.org noted that a 5 pound package shipped by air across the country can create 12 pounds of CO2.
You don’t have to change your entire lifestyle to become earth friendly! With these three simple ideas you can reduce your carbon footprint and help the earth we call home.
