For your relationship with your agent to be a successful one, however, there are certain things you need to communicate up front. Otherwise, the home-buying process will become frustrating and potentially complicated, and you could miss out on the perfect home. So, begin your relationship with your agent by letting them know the following:
If you’re pre-qualified for a mortgage. This is essential to knowing the price range of homes you can shop within. Otherwise, you could be wasting valuable time looking at homes you’re not able to afford. A pre-qualification is also attractive to sellers, potentially giving you an edge in a bidding war.
What your deal-breakers are. If there are any factors that would make a home off-limits for you—i.e., a ground-floor master bedroom, a pool, a main road—be sure to tell your agent up front. The more you can narrow your search in the beginning, the better.
How to reach you. Rapid communication can be critical in the home-buying process, so let your agent know your preferred method of communication. Will you respond quickest to a text?
