Mishawaka, Indiana is nestled along St. Joseph River and is named after Princess Mishawaka, daughter of Shawnee Chief Elkhart.

The city’s history began with the discovery of bog iron deposits in the early 1830’s. Business prospered, and in 1838, St. Joseph Iron Works and three other small towns nearby were incorporated into one— Mishawaka.

In the late 1800’s, the city gained the title as the "Peppermint Capital of the World" due to the rich black loam found in the area that yield great quantities of mint.

The history of Mishawaka is constantly on the communities mind with the city having a Historic Preservation Commission as well as an American Heritage Round Table.

Mishawaka has 8 elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. The surrounding area is home to Bethel College, Indiana University – South Bend and the University Of Notre Dame.  

The Battell Community Center is a place for people of all ages and interests to join in affordable classes, recreation and club activities, and to enjoy the entertainment of theater, and music.

Classes include Zumba, line dancing, Middle Eastern dance, yoga, and various health and fitness classes.  Music and art classes for all levels are offered such as watercolor, pastels, organ, and quilt making. 

The Battell Community Center Auditorium is also open to the public and available to rent for weddings and performances. Throughout the year the Battell Center is host to theatrical, seasonal, and musical performances open to the public.
