Stoughton Real Estate Listings and Information

Stoughton is known for its beautiful historic districts and rich Norwegian heritage, which is still celebrated today with various traditions and practices. Founded in 1847 by Luke Stoughton, the town began with just a lumber mill, general store and a dam over Catfish River, which is now called the Yahara River. A few years later, the railroad came to town and quickly became a destination for settlement.

Stoughton holds several festivals that bring in a tremendous crowd every year. We are the birthplace of the “coffee break,” which originated from the settlement wives, who often worked outside of the home, and requested a “break” during the day to tend to their household duties. In addition, the annual Syttende Mai Festival takes place on the weekend closest to May 17th and signifies Norway’s Independence Day. Also a popular event, the Victorian Holiday Weekend kicks off the season with crafts, parade and of course, food!

Stoughton proudly supports the arts, with various independently owned shops along Main St., and a breath-taking Opera House. If the arts aren’t enough to bring you by, then enjoy some time on Lake Kegonsa, take in a round of golf, or catch a breath of fresh air at the State Park. Whatever you do, don’t miss Fosdal’s Bakery located on Main Street downtown or pass up a chance to lunch at Sugar & Spice Eatery.
