Happy Grandparents Day (September 13, 2015)!

Happy National Grandparents Day!

National Grandparents Day is held on the first Sunday after Labor Day of every year.  This year it is on September 13, 2015.

I believe grandparent(s) should be made to feel special ALL WEEK!

Many people are lucky to have grandparents in their lives, and National Grandparents Day is the perfect time to show your gratitude.  Even if you don’t have living grandparents, Grandparents Day can be an opportunity to spend time with or say thank you to other older adults in your life who have made a positive impact on you.

I also encourage everyone to visit residents in nursing homes and assistant living and to think about adopting some new grandparents.  They have a lifetime of experiences to share with the younger generations.  By doing this it makes them feel special and shows how important they are to our families and the community.   By doing this, I have made many new friends.  When I leave, it makes me feel proud and happy and I always leave with a big smile on my face!

Whether you live far away or just down the street from your grandparent(s) or important older adult(s), there are many simple ways to make them feel special today!

Sunday (September 13, 2015)  is National Grandparents Day - a holiday dedicated to all the Nanas and Papas, Grams and Gramps, and Bubbes and Zaydes in the United States. No matter the nickname, grandchildren across the country will take the day to recognize their parents’ parents

Grandparents Day started with regional celebrations in the 1960s, but it didn’t become official in the U.S. until 1978. Then-president Jimmy Carter established in a proclamation that the first Sunday after Labor Day of each year would be National Grandparents Day.

Whether you’re sending a card, picking up the phone or just spending time remembering them Sunday, try using one of these famous quotes about grandparents. This list of 17 was collected from the American Grandparents Association and quotegarden:

“The reason grandchildren and grandparents get along so well is that they have a common enemy.” -- Sam Levenson

"If nothing is going well, call your grandmother." -- Italian proverb

"Because (grandparents) are usually free to love and guide and befriend the young without having to take daily responsibility for them, they can often reach out past pride and fear of failure and close the space between generations." -- Jimmy Carter

"When grandparents enter the door, discipline flies out the window." -- Ogden Nash

"Every house needs a grandmother in it." -- Louisa May Alcott

"Some of the world's best educators are grandparents." -- Charles W. Shedd

“Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little children.” -- Alex Haley
